The program will begin collecting batteries throughout Colorado in 2028.

Why was this law passed?

Batteries can cause fires if not handled properly, especially at recycling facilities and in garbage trucks. They should not be discarded in the trash or recycling.

In addition, many batteries contain valuable materials that can be recovered and reused.

This law requires battery producers to fund safe, battery collection and recycling, effectively creating a statewide system for battery stewardship.

What should residents know?

Starting in 2028, battery collection sites will be added throughout the state to ensure convenient collection locations exist. Recycling at these drop-off sites will be free for residents. As drop-off sites are established, the battery stewardship organization will publish information around how and where to find convenient locations.

What should businesses know?

Retailers may only sell compliant battery brands. They are not required to be a designated collection site. No point-of-sale fees are allowed.

Producers must join an approved Battery Stewardship Organization (BSO) and participate in Colorado’s approved Battery Recycling Program.
