Greater Colorado Council Summer Field Trip to Breckenridge & Summit County!

Join the Recycle Colorado Greater Colorado Council on Friday, July 31, 9:45-3:00ish to explore how the Town of Breckenridge and Summit County are advancing circular economy solutions across logistics, reuse, and regional waste diversion systems! 

Highlights include: 

  • 106West’s E-Delivery Loading Dock - Breckenridge and 106West Logistics partner to remove large delivery trucks from downtown by using small EVs to reduce congestion, improve safety, and lower emissions through consolidated deliveries and cardboard recycling within the downtown core. 
  • Walk through town to The Crown café to experience the Retrocycle reusable cup program. As part of a town-wide launch, The Crown is among the first cafés participating in this borrow-and-return system, where customers can take their beverages to-go in reusable cups, pay a small deposit, and return them to any participating location for reuse. While at The Crown, we’ll hear from the Retrocycle team as well as staff from High Country Conservation Center (HC3) about their diversion outreach and education efforts in Summit County. Attendees will receive a beverage as part of their registration fee and may order food while at The Crown (registration does not cover food cost). 
  • Drive to the SCRAP (Summit County Resource Allocation Park), the county’s integrated landfill, recycling, composting, and materials recovery system. SCRAP serves as the region’s primary waste management facility, operating as a publicly owned system that processes everything from household waste and recyclables to organics and special materials. The site includes materials recovery facilities (MRFs), composting operations, and the county’s only landfill, providing a comprehensive look at how materials are sorted, processed, and managed at scale. While there, we can see the newly opened Convenience Center that accepts even more materials than drop-offs throughout the County. 

We hope these stops will help portray what it takes to build a high-functioning, community-wide materials management system in a rural/mountain community. 

Location

  • Breckenridge, CO, and the Summit County Resource Allocation Park (SCRAP) 
    • We’ll meet at the Breckenridge Parking Garage (80 North Park Avenue, Breckenridge, CO 80424) between 9:45–10:00 AM, then walk to the 106West loading dock for a 30-minute tour and discussion.
    • From there, we’ll walk along the rec path toward Main Street, stopping to observe town-managed waste enclosures before arriving at The Crown for a longer session featuring refreshments, networking, and conversation on reuse and community outreach. 
    • After returning to the parking area, we’ll carpool/drive to SCRAP for a tour of the recycling center, MRF, landfill, and composting operations, where we will end our day.
  • Cost: Please note that these costs will include light refreshments at The Crown 
    • $10 for Members
    • $15 for Non-Members 
  • Agenda
    • 9:45-10am: Meet at Breckenridge Parking 
    • 10am-10:15am: Walk to 106West Loading dock 
    • 10:15-10:45am: 106West Tour and Discussion 

Additional Notes

  • Moderate walking throughout the Town of Breckenridge and around the SCRAP facilities is required (please wear comfortable shoes). 
  • We hope to accommodate anybody who wants to join, so please pass along any accessibility needs to the relevant contact when registering. 
  • Bring sunscreen, clothing layers, and a reusable water bottle. 
  • Parking is free in the Breckenridge parking garage during the summer. Registered attendees will receive more details closer to the event date.
